You should consider to clean your Laptop or PC at least once a year. If you don’t, it may cause you problems like overheating, blue screens, slowing down and eventually dying.
When your laptop gets dirty and dusty inside, the dust that collects forms a “blanket” over the exhaust grills, stopping the fan from pulling in cold air and pushing out the hot air coming from the processor.
This is the result – see pictures below for before / after shots.
Dirty dusty overheating laptop.
Customer came complaining the fan of his Sony Vaio is making lot of noise.
We opened the laptop and found very fine carpet of dust. It looks very innocent, but it causes overheating and loud noise from the fan. And also it causes the coolant on the processor and graphic chip to harden and even more overheating.
We cleaned the fan and disposed hardened coolant from the chips and heatsink, applied new coolant, assembled all back again, tested and voila. All nice and quiet, running perfectly again.
This laptop came in with complaints of overheating and random shutting down while in use.
It seemed like the fan was not spinning.
We took the machine apart (yes we make it sound easy), and found the fan had become clogged up with dust, and as a result the fan motor had burnt out.
Also, the dust had got into other parts of the laptop, and was blocking the vents where air would normally escape.
We replaced the faulty laptop fan, cleaned all the dust out and replaced the worn thermal paste with new high quality Arctic MX4.
Result: cooler and happier laptop!
Very important that your laptop doesn’t overheat – especially with machines such as this!
Picture shows a build up of dust inside the heatsink/fan area. This build up creates a blanket over the heat dissipation area. All cleaned out, fans greased up and cleaned and new thermal paste applied to help conductivity.
Afterwards stress tested and monitored temperatures to ensure the deep clean was effective.
Result: Happy laptop!
It’s very important that your laptop is able to extract heat from away from the processor, hard drive, ram and the rest of the motherboard.
As you can see from the pictures, the fan and heatsink are clogged up with dust, turning it into a blanket (and keeping in the heat).
Imagine this heat build up over time, re-circulating inside the laptop, and you have the perfect recipe for a disaster.
At Laptop Doctor, we recommend get your laptop deep cleaned at least once a year (if you want your laptop to live longer).
